There should be no abduction of the process of parliamentary democracy and the new era of coalition politics in Malaysia should start on the right foot to realise Bapa Malaysia Tunku Abdul Rahman’s hope for Malaysia to be “a beacon of light in the difficult and distracted world”
In the last 24 hours, the Malaysian Dream for Malaysia to undo the failures of nation-building the last six decades and to restore Malaysia’s place among the great nations in the world instead of becoming a second-rate mediocre country and slipping further to become a third-rate failed, divided and kleptocratic state in four decades’ time has sprung back to life.
On 19th November, 2022, the 15th General Election result was testimony that despite disappointments, Malaysians inside the country and all over the world have not given up their aspiration for Malaysia to learn from the mistakes of six decades of nation-building so that Malaysia can again become a great world-class plural nation.
But 20th November 2022 brought disappointment to many Malaysians, where there was an attempt to abduct the process of parliamentary democracy, and a coalition which did not enjoy the largest number of elected Members of Parliament tried to seize the office of the Prime Ministership.
But on 21st November 2022, Malaysians could breathe again with significant signs that the abduction of the process of parliamentary democracy may not succeed, and that Anwar Ibrahim would succeed to become the 10th Prime Minister of Malaysia.
There should be no abduction of the process of parliamentary democracy and the new era of coalition politics in Malaysia should start on the right foot to realise Bapa Malaysia Tunku Abdul Rahman’s hope for Malaysia to be “a beacon of light in the difficult and distracted world”.
Malaysians achieved a “political miracle” in the 14th General Election on May 9, 2018 to end the seemingly invincible UMNO/BN political hegemony and kleptocratic rule in Malaysia but this “political miracle” was undone by two “backdoor” governments.
Can Malaysians achieve a second “political miracle” in the 15th General Election on November 19, 2022 and will today, November 22, 2022 go down in Malaysian history as one of the most important dates where Malaysia entered the new era of coalition politics on the right footing, fulfilled Tunku Abdul Rahman’s aspiration for Malaysia to be “a beacon of light in a difficult and distracted world” and restore Malaysia to be among the great world-class plural nations where there is minimal corruption, a tiger economy, world-class education standards, sustainable environment and Malaysia the show-case to the world as the confluence of four great civilisations — Malay/Islamic, Chinese, Indian, and Western?
Malaysians await the answer today.
