Motion to refer UMNO MP for
Titiwangsa, Datuk Astaman Abdul Aziz to the Committee for Privileges to
protect Parliament from becoming a laughing stock where a member is
suspended from UMNO for three years for being guilty of money politics and
corruption but is allowed to continue to take his seat in Parliament Media Conference Statement (2) by Lim Kit Siang (Parliament House, Thursday): I have submitted a motion to Parliament to refer the UMNO MP for Titiwangsa, Datuk Astaman Abdul Aziz to the Committee for Privileges when the Dewan Rakyat reconvenes on Monday to protect Parliament from becoming a laughing stock where a member is suspended from UMNO for three years for being guilty of money politics and corruption but is allowed to continue to take his seat in Parliament. I fully agree with former and current UMNO leaders that money politics in a political party is corruption, and that UMNO leaders and members found guilty of money politics should not be immune from the consequences of the law.
It will be most scandalous and outrageous, besmirching the reputation and dignity of Parliament if an UMNO MP found guilty of money politics as to be suspended as a UMNO member for three years can still continue as a Member of Parliament, walking in and out of the Dewan Rakyat, without hindrance!
As the UMNO MP for Titiwangsa, Datuk Astaman Abdul Aziz has been found guilty of money politics and suspended as an UMNO member for three years, he should not be allowed to take his seat in the Dewan Rakyat if Parliament is not to become a national and international laughing stock.
For this reason, the government should agree to give the motion to refer Astaman to the Committee of Privileges the topmost priority when Parliament reconvenes on Monday., allowing for a debate and a vote. Otherwise, the Malaysian public will see the rank injustice in the discriminatory handling of the Karpal Singh and Astaman cases, where the former is suspended from Parliament for six months without allowance although MP for Bukit Glugor did not commit any criminal offence whatsoever.
