Malay Mail should make amends and conduct  itself more responsibly in its coverage of the Canny Ong trial

Media Statement
by Lim Kit Siang

(Petaling JayaThursday): The Malay Mail should conduct itself more responsibly in its coverage of the Canny trial.  The nation-wide outrage at the  heinous crime of the abduction-rape-murder of Canny Ong should not be degraded by flippant coverage of the trial.

The following reaction in one of the Internet mailing groups to the Malay Mail coverage should be given immediate attention by The Malay Mail and all the press in the country:

“Has anyone seen both 16th and 17th editions of Malay Mail? More specifically the front pages highlighting the Canny Ong trial and also the inside pages which carry the trial proceedings in more detail?

If all of us had our eyes wide open as any person should be while reading a newspaper, then it is apparent MM wanted us to see the deceased's beautiful lady friends. I mean how could we have missed the pretty ladies when their faces and figures are laid out in full colour with the accompanying sexist captions? And in the inside pages, the two ladies are again shown. What is MM trying to prove?

When I read the proceedings of the trial, I find no indication at all that the ladies had played a significant part in the trial. So, why did MM see it fit to parade beautiful women during this rape and murder trial? Plain disrespectful!”

These criticisms are most apt and valid and the The Malay Mail should own up to its misjudgment and  make amends.
