Daim should give serious consideration to propose in a revised and updated 2000 Budget on Friday a total overhaul of the salary structure of the lower ranks of the Royal Malaysian Police to ensure a dedicated, professional and honest police force which is regarded as a friend of the people.
The salary structure of the lower ranks of the police are ridiculously
low as shown as follows:
Corporal
Salary Grade SSB: Y12
Salary Scale:
P1 - RM590
P2 - RM628
P3 - RM670
Lance Corporal
Salary grade SSB: Y13
Salary Scale:
P1 - RM790
P2 - RM828
P3 - RM870
Sergeant
Salary grade SSB:Y11
Salary Scale:
P1 - RM835
P2 - RM893
P3 - RM951
Sergeant Major
Salary Grade SSB:Y10
Salary Scale:
P1 - RM1000
P2 - RM1063
P3 - RM1128
Sub-Inspector
Salary grade SSB:Y9
Salary Scale:
P1 - RM1165
P2 - RM1234
P3 - RM1305
The salary structure for the lowest police ranks, in particular that for constables, are not living wages and there should be a major revision involving a 50 per cent increase for the lowest grade while those at the other grades should get lesser proportionate increases.
Let the revised and updated 2000 Budget be remembered as one which ensured that police constables enjoy living wages so that they could become members of a professional, dedicated and honest police force.
