First DAP actions if we succeed in denying Barisan Nasional two-thirds
majority in Penang is to move a motion for five-year extension of the Rent
Control (Repeal) Act
Media Conference Statement
by Lim Kit Siang
(Penang, Wednesday): If DAP suceeds
in smashing the Barisan Nasional political hegemony at the Penang state
level, one of our first actions in the Penang State Assembly are:
-
A motion for five-year extension of the Rent Control (Repeal) Act to ensure
the minimum of socio-economic hardships and dislocation of
the affected tenants.
-
A motion for the restoration of elected Penang Island Municipal Government
and the office of Mayor of Penang Island.
-
A motion to give top priority for Penang to become a Heritage City, with
the work of heritage carried out by Penangites rather than by foreigners,
who know nothing about Penang’s heritage. The Barisan Nasional government
rails so much about foreign influence and yet the Penang state government
relies so much on foreigners on heritage work on the island. Penang’s
heritage had been built by the earlier generations in Penang and they should
be preserved by the present generation in Penang and not by foreigners.
