(Petaling Jaya, Tuesday):  DAP supports the government’s proposal to seek full control over airspace in the southern peninsula, now handled by Singapore.

As Malaysia now has the capability to establish its own air surveillance system and network, the Singapore Government should agree to the restoration of the control of the airspace in the southern peninsula to Malaysia.

Singapore had been given the mandate to control the airspace over the southern peninsula, stretching from Negri Sembilan to Johore, for the past 30 years.

Although this matter would have to be decided by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), the Singapore Government’s announcement of its agreement in principle to support the restoration of control over airspace in the southern peninsula to Malaysia would go a long way to defuse recent Malaysia-Singapore tensions and pave the way for rapprochment and establishment of a new basis for bilateral ties between the two neighbouring countries.
