Penang State Government should ensure that there is API monitoring station for Georgetown to keep track of air quality on the island

Media Statement
by Lim Kit Siang
(Penang, Monday):
The people of Penang are upset that with the deteriorating haze situation in Georgetown, there is no separate Air Pollutant Index (API) for Georgetown.

Many Penangites on the island are most dissatisfied that there is only API reading for Seberang Prai but no API reading for Georgetown.

The Penang State Government should give this omission urgent attention and if it is not possible for the Department of Environment to establish an API station in Georgetown because its hands are full as a result of the national haze crisis, the Penang State Government should take a policy decision to set up an API monitoring station to keep track of the air quality on the Penang island in the interests of the health and well-being of the people in Georgetown.

The people on the Penang island should not be made to feel that Penang, and in particular the island, is in sharp decline - not only in losing the Northern Region International Airport but in not in having an API station to monitor the air quality in Georgetown.
